He was a football quarter back, and she was a beauty pageant star.  After dating country singer Carrie Underwood, and his much publicized relationship with pop star Jessica Simpson, NFL Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo proposed to the lower key Candice Crawford.  Dating all fun loving – all American blondes, Tony definitely knew his type, but felt an even greater connection with Candice.

Candice majored in both journalism and business at the University of Missouri.  During her time there, she competed regularly eventually winning the Missouri Miss USA pageant and placing top ten in the Miss USA pageant.  While in Columbia, Missouri, Candice also worked with the local NBC affiliate KOMU-TV as a reporter, as well as the the CBS afilliate KTVT which often covered the Dallas Cowboys.  Tony reported that he fell for the beauty pageant star and future anchor by saying, “She’s just down to earth and has a good heart. She gets along with anybody and anytime you meet her you can’t help but just enjoy being in her company.”

After the proposal, the couple both took the time to plan the wedding of their dreams, and hired celebrity wedding planner Todd Fiscus to do the job.  When asked how Candice felt about the wedding and her dress she said, “It’s one of those things you look forward to when you were five. This just in! Preventative Care
Keeping your jewelry from looking dingy is easily avoidable. Follow these preventative steps:

• Remove jewelry before you wash your hands or immerse them in water. Water may assist the metal ions in absorbing into your skin, causing skin discoloration. Swimming, bathing, washing your hands and doing dishes can all cause the your jewelry to tarnish and get dirty. Removing your rings before washing, and drying your hands thoroughly after coming into contact with water will prevent this from happening.
• Avoid wearing jewelry while cleaning, gardening, and other activities that can quickly destroy the metal’s finish.  Even talc, which is found in many cosmetics, is known to have an abrasive effect on sterling silver jewelry items.

Simple Cleaning
The easiest way to keep your sterling silver jewelry looking new is to clean it with a soft, clean, dry cloth (any dust or dirt on the cloth may scratch the piece). To keep your sterling silver sparkly:

• DO NOT use toothpaste, dishsoap or baking soda. These contain harsh chemicals that may breakdown the sterling silver’s finish.

Storage
Besides regular cleaning, there are other strategies to extend the life of your sterling silver jewelry.  Proper storage is essential to reduce tarnishing. Sterling silver, stored properly, can be worn often and with minimal cleaning required, making it very easy to care for and lots of fun to wear. Use these storage strategies:

• Keep your sterling silver jewelry in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or you can use a plastic zip lock bag made of Mylar (turkey cooking bags) or polyethylene.  Be warned that some plastic contains sulfur compounds which can cause your jewelry to tarnish faster or stain.  Never use polyvinyl plastic bags.
• Avoid storing your sterling silver jewelry directly on wood surfaces, because wood usually contains acids that can mar the finish.  Oak seems to be the worst for this.
• Avoid storing your sterling silver with other metals, like pennies, and rubber, these too cause tarnish and damage.

While jewelry is beautiful and fun to wear, there are drawbacks, among them that some jewelry can turn skin green. Contrary to popular belief, this does not happen just because the jewelry is cheap or of low quality. There is no single answer to why certain pieces of jewelry turn fingers green, but there are a few possible culprits.

1. Sweat from your finger reacts with the metal on the ring. This means that the metal begins to break down into microscopic fragments, which then wear off onto your skin as you perspire.
2. Metallic abrasion. Tiny metal particles, the result of makeup chemicals coming into contact with jewelry being worn close to the skin, can form black dust and result in discoloration.
3. You may have a slight allergic to the type of metal on the ring. The fragments mix with the natural metals, minerals and chemicals of the body and turn green or blueish-green depending on the wearer’s specific body chemistry.
4. You may have washed your hands with soap that does not react well the metal on your ring. This is usually caused by a chemical reaction between a chemical and the alloy in the metal. Make-up, hand creams, lotions, perfume, etc can all react with the alloy

Regardless of the specific cause for the finger discoloration, after some time the green will disappear.  Many think that finger discoloration indicates the quality of a piece of jewelry. It’s  a common misconception that only cheap rings can turn your finger green. Inexpensive rings are commonly made using copper or a similar brass based metal, which reacts with oxygen to form verdigris, which is green.  However, fine jewelry also can cause discoloration of your finger. This reaction happens more commonly with sterling silver than with gold, although some people do have adverse reactions to gold jewelry as well.

Some wonder: does my finger turning green mean that my ring is not sterling silver? In short, no. Sterling silver contains other metals as well, but the most common stains from sterling silver jewelry are black, and occur when the metal tarnishes (darkens due to a reaction with gases in the air). All silver oxidizes, and this is what makes some silver look tarnished. Some sterling pieces are coated with products that help keep them from tarnishing, but the coatings may wear off in time.
