Top 10 Halloween Costumes 2009 + How To Accessorize!
We’ve compiled a list of the top 10 Halloween costumes you’re sure to spot this year, plus the finishing touches that each look needs to be unique. Take a peek at this list, pick your fave, then find the bling that will make you stand out. The cool thing about this year’s crop of costumes is the variety - you can find solo styles, outfits for couples, and whole collections for a group themed Halloween!
1. Bella and Edward/Cast of Twilight
Of course there’s going to be Twilighters EVERYWHERE this Halloween! Couples will love rocking the Bella Swan and Edward Cullen look, but if you have a group, get the whole cast involved…and be sure the wolf pack from New Moon is represented! You can also opt for one of many versions of Bella, and we have the lowdown on the accessories you need to pull off her look.
Kristen Stewart as Bella in Twilight and/or New Moon: Blue peacoat and jeans, or blue prom dress and leggings (complete with Converse sneakers). For the New Moon look, switch the blue coat for a brown one and make sure you look utterly vacant and depressed. Accessories for both movies are the same - Bella’s turquoise cuff bracelet and a version of Bella’s ring from her mom. Emitations also has versions of Alice’s ring and Rosalie’s earrings!

2. Michael Jackson
Deceased celebrities tend to be favorites at Halloween, and this year in Hollywood gave us a tragically large selection. The most likely winner, though, will be any and all incarnations of the late, great, Michael Jackson. You can go for the entire Jackson 5 (don’t forget those afros!), or don any of Michael’s looks, from Bad to Black or White. Big bling is always going to work as an accessory, but the most important piece is probably his ubiquitous silver glove. Some people will go for a mocking version of Michael, but those who want to stay true to the King of Pop will probably show up as a Thriller zombie or perhaps CaptainEO. The costume shops are sure to offer a medley of Michael Jackson looks, so be sure to do your research and make sure your hair matches whatever era you pick. You might also want a stuffed tiger (see above) or monkey to really make it work.
3. Barack Obama and Michelle Obama
Presidents and First Ladies are another popular pick - heck, we still spot a couple Richard Nixons and Bill Clintons each year! Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton costumes were all the rage in 2008, but this year the focus will be on the illustrious Obamas. You can purchase rubber face masks representing your favorite politicians, so please please please do not attempt any sort of black face to emulate Obama. Trust us, it’s not a good plan. Regardless of whether you opt for a rubber mask, be sure to upgrade your Obama costume with a sleek black suit and his ever-present Blackberry. Your Michelle Obama costume can include a replica of any of her high fashion gowns (pick one designed by Jason Wu if you can’t decide), and of course, a brooch. Michelle Obama loves to wear brooches along with classic pearl necklaces and pearl earrings, so you can’t go wrong with these looks.
4. Jon Gosselin and/or Kate Gosselin
Oh Jon and Kate…what is there to say? Few Halloween costumes are so incredibly easy and distinctive! Jon just requires hair gel, an Ed Hardy tee (and perhaps matching shorts, if you’re feeling ambitious), and some fake diamond earrings. Those diamond studs sure are stylish Jon! Kate requires that crazy mom-mullet (we suggest buying the wig so you don’t do irreparable damage to your hair), a gold wedding ring (Kate still wears her gold wedding ring despite the separation), and a copy of her book. You don’t even need the kids for this costume, since neither parent seems all that interested in the “plus 8″ part of the family! Of course, if you have kids - or a group of friends - there’s always room for a couple poor Gosselin tots.
5. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga can be called a whole lot of things, but boring ain’t one of them. Dressing as Lady Gaga gives you a near infinite number of costumes to choose from, including a dress made from Kermit the Frog puppets, a leotard covered in huge fake bubbles, or a red lace body stocking that covers your whole head. We’re guessing the most popular pick, though, will be her fake blood-soaked white sparkly outfit from the MTV Video Music Awards. Really just throw some feathers, disco balls, and possibly a top hat into the mix and you can pull of the Gaga glam look. For accessories, a huge cocktail ring, a masquerade ball mask, and a crazy statement necklace will be the perfect accents.
6. Farrah Fawcett
Farrah is another celebrity who unfortunately passed away this year. We’ve heard that her infamous feathered hair poster look is going to be huge this Halloween! It’s another easy costume to put together, since it only has a few key elements. The red bathing suit is, of course, of the utmost important. Equally crucial is the feathered blonde hair. If you can’t - or don’t want to - make your own locks go feathered like Farrah, you can pick up a wig easily enough. Add a gold chain necklace and a mega-watt smile to honor Farrah this year! Groups of gals might opt instead for a Charlie’s Angels look…same hair, but also available in brunette! Tight blouses and fake guns are a must for the endless photo ops of you and the girls in the Charlie’s Angels-esque poses.
7. Kim, Kortney, and Khloe Kardashian
It’s going to be easy to keep up with the Kardashians this Halloween! You just need three chicas, and some long sleek dark hair. Buy a sexy vampira wig to get the locks if your own hair doesn’t quite make the grade. Then slip on some tight dresses, and make sure they show plenty of leg. Here’s where it gets fun - one girl gets a pregnant belly (aka Kortney), one girl gets a big fake behind (aka Kim), and one girl gets a big fake diamond ring (aka Khloe)! These details will make you the ultimate Kardashian clan in 2009. Make sure to go for extreme glam makeup, high heels, and possibly some gentlemen who look like the Kardashian boyfriends and husbands. You can even throw on the so-called Kim Kardashian engagement ring (not from Reggie Bush) to take it over the top.
8. Nadia Suleman aka OctoMom
We reserved the ocho spot for Miss 8 herself, Nadia Suleman! The Octomom has been duking it out with Kate Gosselin for the title of America’s most disturbing mother, so you may want to stage a mock fight with your fake Kate friends for true authenticity. Nadia was also quoted recently as saying that Jon Gosselin was (ick!) cute, so you can pair up with a Jon Gosselin costumed gent for an ultra-dramatic look this Halloween. Just throw about 30 baby dolls in a stroller, pull your long black hair (the aforementioned Kardashian wigs will do nicely) into pigtails, and enjoy being the worst parents in recent televised history. Any sort of fake Angelina Jolie jewelry will also work nicely, since we all know the Octomom has a somewhat disturbing interest in looking just like Angie…
9. Cast of Mad Men
We’ve all gone mad for Mad Men, so you can count on seeing the Sterling Cooper crew out and about this Halloween. Men can wear a special edition Brooks Brothers Mad Men suit, which features the slim lines and clean tailoring of the menswear seen on the show. Ladies can wear demure sweater sets and Mad Men jewelry like pearl necklaces, clipon earrings, flower brooches, and twisted knot jewelry. Pair these accessories with any Jackie-O inspired attire and you’re sure to be the mad woman of the hour! Make sure to have lots of cigarette holders (sans actual cigarettes for health reasons), martini glasses, and witty double entendres at hand…
10. Swine Flu
We don’t really want to encourage anyone to dress like Heidi and Spencer, but they did capitalize on one of this year’s oddest fashion trends. We would have thought that swine flu would become a style statement? First the fame hungry Mr. and Mrs. Pratt wore their hospital masks while vacationing in Mexico, and then Katy Perry rocked a flying pig ring. Get it….swine “flew”? Debates raged over both of these celeb accessories, so it’s up to you to decide if it’s funny or offensive. This sort of dark humor is well suited for Halloween, so we promise not to judge if you go for swine flu style costumes this year. So, Jon hurt Kate’s heart. He ruined the show! I mean, I used to love watching the show! Now, (when I watch it) I hate the show! They were such a good couple. I want to tell the world, everyone’s gone crazy!!!!
